Contracting with Futurescale

For several years now, we have been receiving calls and emails looking for PureMVC talent. The Adobe Flash Platform is hotter than ever and PureMVC, a leading architectural framework for Flex, Flash and AIR has grown in demand as a result.

PureMVC Job Trend

In the above trend graph from SimplyHired, you can see the volume has grown by quite a bit over the last year. 346% to be exact. And while relative volume may be small compared to the broader job pool and terms like 'Flash', it's still representative of the increasing interest in PureMVC specifically stated in job requirements.

Along with that trend, we have seen an increase in the number of inquiries regarding PureMVC-based Flash Platform architecture and development assistance. We have gone so far as to get several good coders under contract, but this year we're making a dedicated effort to recruit PureMVC-literate Flex and AIR developers for the purpose of filling this void.

We've been consulting in the industry long enough to know its ways inside and out.  As Adobe Solution Partners, not only do we know the technology, we understand the needs of the contractor as well as the needs of the client. We've worked directly with our own clients as well as contracting through agencies, so we have evolved a good set of contracts that keep everybody's interests in mind and allow us to focus on doing good work. We don't intend to let our contractors or our clients get burned.

Finally, we have a vested interest in seeing PureMVC survive in the industry, and we can help this happen by finding the best PureMVC developers and pairing them with the best PureMVC jobs. We don't intend to become a massive organization, we just want to fill the niche with quality work and be sure that everyone is satisfied with the process as well as the result.

Thus far, we've had to turn down work we couldn't take on ourselves. Without a larger Rolodex of available talent, we can't really take on and manage the larger jobs, and turning them away seems wrong. So here's how we're planning to bootstrap this operation:

  1. We need to fill that Rolodex. If you're a PureMVC developer, visit http://contact.futurescale.com to join.
  2. We need to get to know you. We want to find out about your Flex, AIR and PureMVC skills. More on this in a sec.
  3. We need to deploy you to gigs. When we have enough available talent to actively seek gigs rather than passively respond to inquiries, we will do so and become a channel for work for PureMVC developers.

Now for the 'getting to know you' part. Beyond the standard interview process, we have thought of a reasonable way to test the mettle of our contractors while seeing that they are paid for their time, but not having to deploy them to a 3-6 month contract and hoping everything goes well. The answer to that is something else that we get asked about often: Tech Support.

Lots of agencies are standardizing on PureMVC, and many that don't standardize still work with PureMVC among other frameworks. And when an agency builds an app for their client based on PureMVC, its good piece of mind to know that if they find themselves in a jam, they can readily get support from a person who understands the framework well enough to get them back on track.

So, we are planning to offer Incident Support plans for PureMVC for the Flash Platform. Futurescale customers purchasing support will have access to our confidential forums where you, skilled contractor, will be able to work with them to solve their problem and get paid for your time at the same rate that you would receive if you were deployed on a  job.

This is just one of many initiatives Futurescale is taking on this year, and we hope you'll join us in helping to fill the growing need for sound PureMVC architecture, development and support.
